The next big product is often hiding in a niche hobby community. The product we’re looking at today started as a mechanical-keyboard fidget, then layered in sensory appeal, character design, and collectibility.
Same underlying demand, three different businesses:
- 10M+ units in under a year — a mass-market collectible toy.
- 15,000 units in 15 minutes — a creator-led DTC drop.
- 2,200+ units from one $15 listing — an independent artist business.
Let’s look at how the same core idea was reshaped for different audiences, and how China’s established keyboard and toy supply chains support through standard switches, custom molding, finishing, and final assembly.
Paying $15 for One Keyboard Click
For mechanical keyboard fans, that’s not strange. They’ve spent years buying switches for satisfying sound and feel, customizing keycaps, and collecting unique designs. Pocket-sized fidgets and keychains brought that experience beyond the keyboard, appealing to people who simply enjoy pressing, clicking, and collecting.
A niche hobby had found its way into ASMR, sensory play, and collectible accessories. Independent creators began turning that appeal into small products with their own designs. The opportunity lay in repackaging something people already enjoyed. On Etsy, there are keycap fidget keychains priced from $5 to $22, ranging from clickers with 3D-printed parts to personalized name keychains.
One standout independent artist in this niche is Geoffrey Siu, who sells $15 clicky keychains alongside stickers and other merchandise. His product is surprisingly simple: a ready-made Gateron keyboard switch, a keycap printed with his artwork, a plastic holder, and an acrylic charm. It ships unassembled, so customers put the parts together themselves. That DIY element fits right into the hobby’s culture of customizing.
From a Niche Keyboard Accessory to a Mass-Market Collectible
50 million little clicking toys in just 14 months. That’s how many Clickeez sold worldwide after launching last year.
They spotted how adults were customizing mechanical keyboards, swapping keycaps, and sharing satisfying typing sounds online. So they combined that appeal with the already popular sensory and fidget toy market, turning it into a colorful collectible for kids aged six and up—with cute 3D characters they could press, hear, and collect.
The clever part is how they keeps customers buying more. With 70 new characters in Series 3, mystery packs, and rare finds, a $4.99 two-pack can easily lead to bigger packs and repeat purchases. The pieces even snap together to fill a collectible keyboard display, giving fans another reason to keep collecting.
Let’s do the math. Even with zero duplicates, collecting all 70 characters would cost around $120—about the price of a decent mechanical keyboard. Starting at just $4.99, Clickeez uses mystery packs, rare characters, and collector displays to drive larger purchases and repeat sales.
Cashing In on the Broader Gaming Market
Just seven months after Clickeez hit the market, Clix and Lacy, two popular gaming livestreamers, launched TapCap. With over 20 million followers combined, they used their audience on Twitch, a popular gaming livestreaming platform, to sell clicky collectibles through creator-led limited drops. Their first Creatures mystery box collection sold out in under an hour.
Built for gamers, TapCap kept the mystery-box format and created its own original 3D characters that doubled as clicky fidgets and keyboard-compatible keycaps.
The first drop featured the ultra-rare Slime Guy. Just a month later, TapCap built on the character’s appeal with five variations in different colors and finishes, then expanded the lineup with more original characters, gradually building its own collectible character universe.
TapCap leveraged Clix and Lacy’s existing fan community through gaming livestreams and paid short-form video clips to build demand for limited drops on its own website. During its second launch, it sold 15,000 units in just 15 minutes, reaching nearly 30,000 over the weekend.
China’s Supply Chains Behind the “Clicky” Business
These products bring together two established supply chains in China: mechanical keyboard components and custom plastic toys. Much of the supplier network is concentrated in Guangdong’s Pearl River Delta. Huizhou is home to switch makers such as Gateron and TTC, while nearby Dongguan and Shenzhen offer suppliers for molding, printing, finishing, product development, and assembly.
But the three businesses we’ve looked at have different focus: low-cost customization, custom toy manufacturing, and production planning for limited drops.
For an artist-made product like Geoffrey Siu’s clicky keychain, production is fairly simple: a standard Gateron switch, an existing keycap shape customized with dye-sublimated artwork, a housing, a printed acrylic charm, and packaging. Different artwork designs can share the same keycap shape, reducing the need for new molds and making small-batch testing more accessible.
Clickeez takes it further into custom toy manufacturing. Its sculpted 3D characters and interlocking bases involve custom tooling, injection molding, coloring, surface finishes, and assembly across dozens of designs.
With so many designs in production, keeping quality consistent is another challenge. For example, the interlocking bases require precise tolerance control to ensure pieces snap together easily and stay securely connected.
TapCap’s manufacturing is closer to Clickeez, with custom-molded ABS characters. But its limited-drop model puts different pressure on the supply chain: demand is concentrated in a short sales window, making accurate demand forecasting, production planning, inventory management, and order fulfillment especially important.
