We regularly help overseas clients source and customize laundry and other cleaning products in China. Just a couple of weeks ago, Mark, a young entrepreneur from the US, came to us with a new laundry detergent project. He’d spotted a fragranced detergent selling for nearly $20 on Amazon and saw a business opportunity. He wanted to launch his own brand and find out how much it would cost to make a similar product in China.
After learning more about his plans, we took him to a household cleaning products factory in Lishui, Zhejiang, about a two-hour drive from Yiwu. At the factory, we showed the owner a photo of the product Mark had in mind and asked for a quote. The owner’s quote for the basic formula caught Mark by surprise: just $0.60 per bottle, with an MOQ of only 1,000 bottles.
So why is it so inexpensive to make? The factory owner explained that basic laundry detergent formulas are already well established, and many manufacturers have ready-to-use formulas, so there’s no need to develop everything from scratch.
The production process is relatively straightforward, too. Water makes up most of the formula, while surfactants do the main cleaning work. The factory blends them according to the formula, then adds ingredients like fragrances, enzymes, and chelating agents as needed. After adjusting the viscosity and pH, the detergent goes through deaeration and quality checks before being bottled.
But Mark also wanted to make his product stand out with a unique fragrance, formula, and bottle design. This is a common request we hear from clients sourcing laundry care products. Some customizations add relatively little to production costs but can give a product a stronger selling point and even support a higher retail price.
Based on our past sourcing projects and real-world brand examples, we’ve identified three ways smaller brands can differentiate their laundry products, along with the factory customization options, MOQs, and costs involved.
Stand Out with Fragrance and Bottle Design
For many new brands, one of the easiest ways to stand out is to start with a factory’s existing formula, customize the fragrance, and add their own bottle labels, colors, and other design details. Compared with developing a completely new formula, this type of customization is usually simpler and less demanding.
Mark wanted to give his laundry detergent a distinctive fragrance to set it apart from standard products. We checked with the Lishui factory and learned that adding a custom fragrance wouldn’t change the unit price, which would remain at $0.60 per bottle. However, the order would need to fill one full 40-foot high-cube container (40HQ). Since laundry detergent is relatively inexpensive but heavy to ship, the factory needs to factor in both production volume and shipping costs when setting the MOQ.
With more than 500K customers, US laundry care brand Frey sells its detergent for around $25 a bottle. The brand brings a perfume-like approach to everyday laundry, offering a range of signature scents, from woody and amber notes to floral fragrances. This lets customers choose their laundry detergent just like they would a perfume. Frey also carries these scents across fabric softeners, dryer sheets, and scent boosters, creating a complete laundry care collection around each fragrance.
Beyond the detergent itself, bottle color, shape, and packaging details can also help a brand stand out. If you want a custom bottle shape, you’ll need a new mold, which typically costs around $8K, with an MOQ of about 10K bottles. But if you only want to change the bottle color, the factory can add color masterbatch to the plastic resin, so there’s no need for a new mold.
We once helped James, a UK-based entrepreneur launching his own cleaning brand, source custom bottles. He initially wanted just 1,000–1,500 bottles per color, but several suppliers told him that custom colors required new molds. One even quoted an MOQ of 100,000 bottles per color. For a new brand that hadn’t tested market demand yet, that meant a huge upfront inventory commitment.
We eventually found a factory in Taizhou, Zhejiang, that offered a more flexible solution. By adding color masterbatch directly to the plastic resin, the factory could produce bottles in different colors without making a separate mold for each one. This brought the MOQ down to 10K bottles, making the project much more manageable for James.
Develop Detergents for Specific Laundry Problems
Regular laundry detergents are designed for everyday cleaning, but niche products can be tailored to specific fabrics, stains, or washing conditions. For example, sportswear tends to trap sweat and body oils, dark clothes need extra care to prevent fading, and people living in hard-water areas may struggle with clothes feeling rough and stiff after washing.
In September, Carlos, a product engineer from Mexico, reached out to us. He noticed that hard water in his area often left clothes feeling rough and stiff after washing, so he saw an opportunity to develop a laundry detergent specifically formulated for hard-water conditions.
Based on his requirements, we found him a detergent manufacturer in Lanxi, Zhejiang. The factory has its own R&D lab and experience developing custom formulas. It’s now open to working with Carlos on formula development and adjustments. We’ll continue coordinating discussions, sample development, and testing to help move the project forward.
A similar niche need inspired the US brand HEX Performance. Founder Drew Westervelt, a former professional lacrosse player, found that regular detergents couldn’t fully remove the sweat odors trapped in sportswear and protective gear, especially those made from synthetic fabrics like polyester.
So he teamed up with a cleaning chemistry expert to develop a detergent specifically for activewear and performance fabrics. It tackles stubborn odors while helping preserve fabric stretch, breathability, and moisture-wicking performance. A 50 fl oz bottle sells for around $19.99, with a per-load cost roughly 2.5 times that of regular laundry detergent.
Explore Different Laundry Detergent Formats
Beyond customizing formulas and packaging, changing the product format is another way to stand out. Concentrated laundry detergent, laundry sheets, and pods require different formulas and manufacturing processes, so not every traditional liquid detergent factory can produce them. One of our long-term partner factories has experience with these formats, its MOQ is one full 40-foot high-cube container.
Lighter formats can also reduce packaging and shipping costs, while refill packs help drive repeat purchases. Take Blueland, for example. It has built a business generating tens of millions of dollars a year by turning household cleaning products into small tablets. The tablets remove around 90% of the water found in traditional liquid cleaners, leaving the active ingredients in a compact format.
Customers simply add water to reusable containers to make their cleaning solutions, then buy paper-wrapped refills when they run out. In 2025, Blueland generated over $78.6 million in net revenue and sold 18 million refill packs.
In fact, we helped a client source laundry detergent sheets three years ago. Compared with traditional liquid detergent, sheets are lighter and take up less space, which can help reduce shipping costs. At the time, the factory quoted around $1.20 for a 30-sheet pack, while similar products retailed for about $15. It’s truly a great product choice.
Laundry detergent is a well-established category, but there are still plenty of niche opportunities to explore. Our past client projects have shown that, with China’s mature manufacturing supply chain, even smaller brands can create products that stand out with just a few simple customizations.
