China Haul: Where to Shop in China

Beauty finds, blind-box toys, cute accessories, and clever gadgets — China Haul videos are taking over social media, with travelers showing off their suitcases full of surprisingly affordable finds. Some even arrive with an empty suitcase, just in case.

And fun is also about stumbling across a gadget you never knew existed, finding a pair of earrings for just a few dollars, or discovering that the accessories you’ve seen online come in dozens of styles at prices that seem almost too good to be true.

To make the most of these markets, let’s take a look at where to go, what you can buy as an individual shopper, how to fit a visit into your China itinerary, and how to ship your purchases home.

Guangzhou: A Treasure Trove of Fashion, Wigs & Accessories

If your idea of a China Haul involves refreshing your wardrobe, experimenting with new hairstyles, or stocking up on accessories, Guangzhou is a great place to start.

The city’s wholesale districts are packed with clothing, shoes, bags, fashion jewelry, hair accessories, wigs, and beauty supplies. The real fun is comparing styles and prices across shops — sometimes finding several versions of the same item within a few minutes of walking.

  • Fashion jewelry: Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and statement pieces in almost every style imaginable. In some accessory markets, simple earrings can cost just a few yuan per pair, although prices depend on materials, design, and order quantity.

  • Wigs and hair extensions: Guangzhou is a major destination for hair products, with everything from budget-friendly synthetic wigs to human-hair extensions and more elaborate styles. Prices vary considerably, so check the hair type, length, density, and construction before buying.

  • Clothing and everyday accessories: Trendy tops, dresses, bags, belts, and other wardrobe additions, often with far more styles to choose from than you’d find in a typical shopping mall.

One thing to remember: these are wholesale markets. Some shops sell individual pieces, while others require you to buy several items or a small batch. Always ask about the minimum order before getting too excited about the price tag.

What about fake bags, shoes, and other branded items?

You may also come across counterfeit designer bags, sneakers, watches, sunglasses, and other branded accessories. They can be tempting, especially when the prices are dramatically lower than those of the originals.

However, counterfeit goods can run into problems at customs and may be seized, particularly when shipped internationally. The rules vary by destination, so it’s worth checking your destination’s customs regulations.

Shenzhen: Tech Gadgets, Big Surprises at Huaqiangbei

If Guangzhou is a playground for fashion lovers, Shenzhen is where gadget fans can really lose track of time.

Huaqiangbei is famous for its incredible concentration of electronics shops. Walk through its buildings and you’ll find phone accessories, wireless earbuds, magnetic stands, mini fans, portable lights, and all kinds of clever little devices, many of them costing just a few dollars.

A few tips for gadget hunting:

  • Compare prices before buying. Similar-looking products can vary quite a bit in price and quality. Check a few stalls before making a decision.

  • Don’t be afraid to bargain. The first price isn’t always the final one. You can start with a lower offer and work toward a reasonable price. Buying several items together may also help you get a better deal.

  • Look beyond the ground floor. Street-facing stalls on the first floor can be more expensive. Explore the upper floors and nearby buildings to compare more options.

  • Test products in person. Try earbuds for sound quality, check how a mini fan performs at its highest setting, and make sure accessories fit your devices.

  • Know where to shop for branded products. If you’re specifically looking for genuine DJI or Huawei products and reliable after-sales support, official stores are a safer choice.

Shanghai: IP Stores, Blind Boxes & Creative Souvenirs

Shanghai offers a great place to explore China’s pop culture, character merchandise, beauty products, creative souvenirs, and homegrown fashion brands. Shopping districts such as Nanjing Road and Huaihai Middle Road are packed with mainstream brands and trendy stores.

For something more playful, head to MINISO LAND and POP MART, where character-themed merchandise, plush toys, and blind boxes make shopping part of the fun. Many blind boxes cost around $5–10 per box. Popular collaborations, plush blind boxes, and special editions can cost $11–14 or more. Small keychains, stationery, and other character-themed accessories also make popular gifts.

Along Huaihai Middle Road, you’ll find stores from Chinese designer brands, offering distinctive fashion and accessories.

For something more distinctive, explore Yuyuan for traditional Chinese-style gifts and crafts, or Tianzifang for creative souvenirs, artistic finds, and independent boutiques. Shanghai also has plenty of Chinese beauty brands and creative stationery to browse.

Yiwu: Where a Shopping Trip Can Turn Into a Treasure Hunt

If you’ve watched a China Haul video and wondered where all those colorful accessories, tiny toys, household gadgets, and novelty products come from, Yiwu is one place worth exploring. Yiwu wholesale market spans six districts and offers more than 2 million product types, from toys, jewelry, and stationery to cosmetics, bags, textiles, hardware, home goods, and smart gadgets.

The prices can be a real surprise. Hair clips may cost around $0.30, three pairs of earrings about $1.40, socks just $0.15–0.30 a pair, and small plush toys under $3. Prices vary by design, quality, and quantity.

Some sellers allow single-item purchases or mixed styles, while others require minimum orders. The best prices may also apply only to bulk purchases. Just ask if you can buy single pieces or mix different styles before you shop.

Where to start

If you’re short on time, start with the categories you’re most interested in, then explore further if something catches your eye.

Take a look inside district 6: new trends, creative designs & smart tech

District 6 is especially worth exploring if you’re looking for newer products and unusual finds. Planning Your China Haul Trip

China is easier to get around than you might expect. High-speed trains connect many major cities, while domestic flights are handy for longer trips. If you’re already planning to visit Shanghai, it’s relatively easy to fit Yiwu into your itinerary. Direct high-speed trains from Shanghai Hongqiao can get you there in around 1.5 hours.

If you’re flying into Hong Kong and want to visit Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei, the high-speed train from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Futian takes just around 14 minutes. Guangzhou is another major gateway, but Yiwu is farther away: the high-speed train journey takes roughly 5–7 hours.

For train tickets, book through the official China Railway 12306 website or the mainstream travel platform like Trip.com. Bring the same passport you used to book your ticket. Once in Yiwu, taxis and ride-hailing services such as DiDi are convenient ways to reach the market. The market is enormous, so choose the districts you want to visit before setting off.

For more route options, see our guide on how to get to Yiwu.

From Yiwu Railway Station, you can take the Jinhua–Yiwu–Dongyang rail transit line to International Trade City Station, or use a taxi or ride-hailing service such as DiDi. The market is huge, so check which district you want to visit and plan your route before setting off.

Food delivery, night markets & local life

China’s food delivery apps are incredibly convenient. They can also bring meals, snacks, groceries, and other essentials. Some also deliver over-the-counter medicines from local pharmacies. You can have an order delivered to your hotel, although the pickup process varies. Some hotels use delivery robots to bring orders to guest floors.

For a sit-down meal, Yiwu has plenty of international options, including Middle Eastern, Turkish, Korean, and Japanese restaurants. If you’d rather try regional Chinese food, you’ll also find restaurants serving Sichuan, Hunan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Jiangxi dishes across the city.

How to Get Your China Haul Home

If you’ve only bought a few things, packing them in your suitcase is the easiest option. Just check your airline’s baggage allowance and any restrictions on what you can bring home.

Airport Baggage Drop-Off

Bought more than you can carry? In Yiwu, you have plenty of shipping options. Some sellers can arrange delivery within China and international shipping. For smaller parcels or urgent deliveries, established international couriers such as DHL Express, FedEx, and UPS are worth checking out.

If you’ve bought from several suppliers, a Yiwu local freight forwarder can receive your goods, consolidate and repack them, and arrange international shipping by air or sea.
