Today we’re talking about a classic product that just got a clever upgrade — the heated ice cream scoop. In the past month, its sales on Amazon have more than doubled. It’s gaining traction on social media too. With ice cream season just around the corner, we’re pretty sure this is only the beginning. 

Grab the handle, and the scoop head automatically warms up. Put it down, and it cools off. No more wrestling with rock-hard ice cream. Simple and smart.

Is It a New Product?

Traditional ice cream scoops are usually made of stainless steel or some heat-conductive alloy. The usual fix is to soak the scoop in hot water. But it often ends with a bowl of nasty water that totally ruin your appetite. 

On Amazon, the earliest listing of heated ice cream scoop we found was from September 2024, and a new one just launched about 2 month ago. That means this is still a pretty new category, and it’s catching on fast. But as we digged deeper, we found that Kitchen HQ actually launched a heated scoop back in April 2023. Think of it as the earlier, less upgraded version. Both products’ prices are around $30.

One of the biggest upgrades is how it powers on. This scoop replaced the switch with an automatic on-and-off feature. It heats up automatically when you hold it, and stops when you put it down, making it smarter and more energy-efficient. The max temperature also got a boost, from 104°F (40°C) to 158°F (70°C). They’ve also added a display at the end of the handle showing both battery level and current temperature.

Hot Scoop, Hot Sales?

There are now a dozen sellers offering this product on Amazon, though the style options are still pretty limited, mostly black and white. Among them, two sellers are clearly leading the pack, each moving over a thousand units a month. One of them was likely the first to bring this product to market and has since expanded the lineup with new colors like blue, red, and gray to attract more buyers. 

Another top seller took a different approach by bundling the scoop with a matching holder. It’s a smart move because the scoop’s smooth, rounded surface doesn’t stand well on its own and easily smudges tables. Adding a holder solved that problem and made the whole set more appealing.

Whoever spotted the potential of this product early on really nailed the timing. Right now, keywords related to heated ice cream scoops make up about 1/4 of all search terms in the ice cream scoop category. The average conversion rate sits between 5% to 11% ,which is not bad at all. Even more impressive is that just a month ago, most of those keywords had PPC bids under $2. 

Where Could It Improve?

What customers are saying

Even though most of these scoops hold a solid rating above 4.3 stars, we still found a few recurring complaints and they’re worth paying attention to. Some users mentioned that the battery doesn’t last long or dies quickly after a few uses. Others pointed out the lack of a power switch, which makes it hard to fully control when it turns on. There were also concerns about the charging port not being sealed, which could be a safety issue. 

Good ideas from a failed Kickstarter project

The product idea is genuinely clever. Interestingly, we came across a Kickstarter project from April 2023 called MeltBuddy that aimed to do something very similar. However, the campaign appears to have failed, and the product was never delivered. But some of the ideas could be used to optimize the current product:

They designed the scoop to swap between an ice cream scoop and a butter knife, which could be super handy for cutting through rock-hard butter.

Social Media Helped Scoop Up Sales

Beyond Amazon ads, this product is also getting a solid push from other platform. They’ve partnered with influencers to boost traffic and visibility, like ice cream influencer on Instagram.

Looks like it’s working. In February, the product launched on TikTok Shop and started using a commission-based affiliate model. Since then, we’ve seen multiple videos pulling in impressive views, and the buzz around this product is clearly picking up.
